DUTCH EAST INDIES

THE DEFENDING FORCES AIRCRAFT AVAILABLE SHIPMENTS FROM AMERICA (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 27. The Netherlands Government reveals that the Dutch forces in the East Indies include between 500 and 1000 American planes and an army of 125,000, fully trained, as well as five cruisers, eight destroyers, eight torpedo boats, 20 submarines and many smaller craft. Since December 7 Dutch naval and air forces have sunk two Japanese cruisers, 11 transports, two tankers and two merchantmen, and damaged at least one aircraft-carrier, eight closers, four destroyers and 14 transports, as well as a large warship and a passenger ship. The air force is distributed over a large number of island bases, increasing shipments of American planes having enabled a reversal of the former defence strategy, which was based on the assumption that only the larger islands could be defended.
