HOUSING CONSTRUCTION
STATE SCHEME TO CONTINUE DEFENCE WORKS TAKE PRECEDENCE (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Jan. 26. “ There was a wild rumour that the Government was going to stop building State houses owing to the new regulations declaring certain industries essential without reference being made to the building of houses,” said the Minister of Housing, Mr H. T. Armstrong, when interviewed to-day. “Nothing could be further from the minds of the Government. In Auckland and Wellington particularly we are going to build every house it is possible for us to build.” Mr Armstrong said that defence works had ,to take precedence, but the Government intended to organise all the available labour and equipment so that defence works could be done and as soon as possible various plants would be released for housing work at the nearest points. He had to-day met a deputation of carpenters and 'building contractors to discuss the situation.
