NAVAL EXPANSION^
AMERICA'S PROGRAMME WASHINGTON, (Rec. 8 p.m.) Dec. 16. The House Naval Affairs Committee approved the authorisation for expansion of the navy after the size of the contemplated expansion was reduced from 900,000 to 150,000 tons at the navy’s request. The measures left the types of ships to be constructed to the discretion of the President and the Navy Department, but the chairman, Mr Carl Vinson, said it would not include battleships. He said: “This does not mean that the United States is abandoning the idea of battleships, but it takes longer to build •them,”
