GILBERT AND ELLICE GROUPS JAPANESE OPERATIONS (P A ) WELLINGTON, Dec. 16. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, announced to-day that he had received a further report in connection with the Japanese landing on certain of the Gilbert Islands. The report is as fol"fhe Japanese evacuated Tarawa on December 10, after destroying launches and canoes and a number of buildings. Two natives are reported to have been killed, but there were no European casualties. Tarawa was again reported clear of the Japanese on December 14. Makin Island is still believed to be in the hands of the Japanese, "Japanese air reconnaissance down the line of the Gilbert Islands as far as Ellice Island has been reported." The Ellice Islands are some 2000 miles north of Auckland, and the Gilbert Islands are further north still.
