OTAGO GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL
This school, established in 1871 by the Provincial Government, also has a great record of service. From the outset a high standard was set by principals and teachers. ' That standard has been fully maintained, and the school continues to rank as one of the best girls' secondary schools in the Dominoin. •.■
The school is admirably situated, having a commanding position in the centre of the town overlooking the harbour.
The principal is Miss M. H. M. King, M.A., and she has the assistance of 18 full-time and 3 part-time teachers. The courses of instruction include an academic, course for girls who wish to enter for University junior and national scholarships or otherwise prepare for a University degree course; a general course designed especially for those who wish to enter the teachers' Training College or who desire a general culture without undue emphasis on academic studies; a commercial course intended to fit girls for book-keepers and typists, while at the same time giving a thoroughly sound general education; a homecraft course for those with a special bent in that direction; and an art course, including drawing, design, and art crafts. It is possible for a pupil in any course to arrange a programme that will enable her to pass the University entrance examination, while pupils not wishing to take a University course are prepared for the school certificate, the examination for which is of the same standard as for a University entrance, but allows a wider choice of subjects. Games and other activities give a wider -meaning to school life than can be obtained through classroom studies alone.
