KING EDWARD TECHNICAL COLLEGE
The college is a monument to the genius, insight, and altruism of its foundei the late George M Thomson* who inspired a band of his fellow-citizens late in 1888 to provide for? deserving youths a means of study aftei working hours From the humblest beginnings there arose in succession a set of evening classes, a permanent staff, a full-time day school; in 1921 there was entrusted to the Board of Managers the care of the Dunedin School of Art; and slowly, year by year, the college has increased in strength "and sureness of aim without ever losing its original inspiration of service to the community. The buildings shown in the illustration torm part of the present college. The facade includes only 24 out of the 54 rooms actually used as classrooms, laboratories, and workshops, but It gives an [idea of the generous proportions of the buildings and of the excellence oi the lighting. There were taught in the college in 1941 98 pupils from primary schools, taking preliminary art subjects 748 full[time pupils, 1656 part-time students (the latter principally in evening classes); these figures give some idea of the teach;ing capacity of the whole institution I Technical High School If the Technical High School* were a (separate institution, it would be regarded las one of the really large secondary [schools of the Dominion yet it forms only part of the daytime work of the college. lit receives annually more than one-third [ef the boys and girls who leave primary [schools in the Dunedin district, and pro'vides them with courses of great variety,, hn preparation for commerce, the various' [trades, for almost all occupations that art* open to girls; Indeed, for all occupations except those that demand the knowledge [.of Latin. Dunedin Schopl of Art As the art centre of Otago, the Art • School, housed In 'its own building at the •corner of Tennyson street and York place.. :«ets itself to meet the needs of art stu--1 dents of every type and of every degree of maturity within the limits of the regu(lations under which It is conducted. Senior School of Commerce This special school gives short courses to girls who have undergone at least three years of training it* a secondary school, and who desire to prepare themselves seriously for a business career.
