DETERMINED RESISTANCE
IMPORTANCE OF GAZALA (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.'* CAIRO, Dec. 14. Subsequent to this despatch it was announced that New Zealanders had completed the encirclement of Gazala. The obstinacy and determined resistance encountered by the New Zealand forces in the present engagement a.t Gazala indicates that the enemy regards this strongpoint as a solid obstacle in the path of the Eighth Army's advance. The New Zealand troops operating against Gazala are now about 40 miles west of Tobruk. and this is ;an indication of the rapid advance made in the past few days. The enemy is covering his withdrawal at several points and the force at Gazala of mixed Germans and. Italians is reported to be strong. The weather continues to show an improvement. The Italian Freedom Radio stated that over 25,000 Italians« have been killed in Africa. "The Italians have lost , position after position, and are suffering for the sake of Mussolini's German friends."
