BALCLUTHA Swimming Carnival.—The Balclutha Amateur Swimming Club held its first carnival of the present season on Saturday. The attendance of the public was fair, but there was a big muster of competitors including visitors from Kiwi, Kaikorai, and Toko Clubs. Entries in all events were good. During the afternoon J. Stewart (Kiwi) gave an exhibition of diving, which was much appreciated. Good times were recorded and close finishes resulted, particularly in the Intermediate, Open, and the Backstroke events. The Mayor (Mr J. R. Copland) extended a welcome to the visitors. At night an enjoyable dance was held. The following are the results:—Beginners' Width: A. Gold 1, L. Burt 2, A. At the patriotic tournament at Balclutha and Stirling on December 5 s two Kaitangata rinks tied for first with 45 points. In a subsequent play-off P. Prescott beat Mackie by 20 points to 14. Personal.—Private advice was received on Sunday that Corporal Stephen Algie, eldest son of Mr and Mrs D. G. Algie, was wounded in the Libyan fighting. Mr and Mrs James Guest have received similar advice concerning their eldest son, Frank. OWAKA Obituary.—Advice has been received by Mr J. Woodrow that his son, Walter, was killed in action in Libya about November 27. He left New Zealand about 12 months ago for Egypt, and his death is the first among district soldiers who are serving overseas. Owaka Dairy Factory.—ln accordance with the new dairy regulations, the local dairy factory will be unable to continue the sale of butter at Is 5d per lb at the factory office to the general public, and butter will now be available only to suppliers to the factory at this price. MILTON Obituary.—The death has occurred of Mr Alexander Dickson Crawford at the age of 48 years. He was the elder son of Mr and Mrs Alexander Crawford, and was born at Caversham and attended the Green Island School. In 1915 he came to Milton and worked at the lime Kilns at Milburn Two years later he joined the N.Z.E.F., and saw service in France and elsewhere with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was with the Army of Occupation in Germany until he returned to New Zealand in 1919, when he resumed work at the lime kilns. In 1921 he married Miss Hazel Reid, by whom he is survived. Mr Crawford was a member of the Loyal Milton Lodge of Oddfellows and was a committeeman for several years of the Bruce Returned Soldiers' Association. He was also on. the committee of the Bruce Scottish Society. Personal.—Mr A. S. Powley, postmaster at Gore, has been spending his annual leave with his mother In George street. St. John Ambulance.—At the recent examination of members of the local division of the St. John Ambulance Association, for which Dr J. N. Edgar was the examiner, the following awards were gained:—Medallion—Mesdames E. G. Dignan and J. M. E. Rush, Misses S. M. Crawford, S. L. Logan and M. E. Marshall: labels—Misses F. E. Dignan, M. S. Martin .and I. B. Melville; pendantij—Mesdames F. E. Beardsmore, C. R. Kenriard and M. L. Taylor. TAHAKOPA Home Guard.—The branches, of the Maclennan Area Home Guard paraded at Maclennan on Thursday. There was an excellent attendance of approximately 50 guardsmen, and training was given by officers and instructors of the Gore headquarters. For the past few months, little activity had been shown in the Maclennan area in Home Guard affairs, and it was pleasing to see guardsmen from Tarara-Purakauiti, Kahuika, Tahakopa, and Stuarts present. It is expected that musketry training and firing practice will be given in the near future. Soldier Honoured. —There was an excellent attendance of Tahakopa residents in the hall recently to tender a complimentary social to Sergeant J. McKenzie, who was in the district on leave. The function took the form of a dance. At a suitable interval, Mr J. Skipworth, on behalf of friends in the Tahakopa district, presented Sergeant McKenzie with an envelope. Mr E. Brown also spoke, and Sergeant McKenzie suitably replied.
