OBITUARY

PROFESSOR A. R. ANDREW

The death took place at the Dunf edin Hospital yesterday of Professor Arthur Robert Andrew, director of the Otago School of Mines and professor of mining at the University of Otago. Professor Andrew wag born in me Gatlins district in 1881 and re- :* ceived his education at the Albany Street School .and the Otago Boys’ High School, of which he was dux in 1898. He won a series of prizes and

scholarships and Jock the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1902. Two years later he became an associate of the Otago School of Mines, and he then undertook research work at the Birmingham University. He took his M.Sc. degree in 1906 and D.Sc. (N.Z.) in 1911.-. For a number of years he was Sbroad, being appointed mineral surveyor to the Nyasaland Government in 1906 and later was employed in South America as a petroleum zoologist, He was associated with the Shell Oil Company from 1912 to 1926 in Sarawah. Sinai, Jugoslavia, Hague and then returned to New Zealand for family reasons. He , had since • been geologist to Dominion oilfields and published many works on mining and geology. While a student at the University, Professor Andrew was a keen •footballer and he maintained his interest in the' game throughout his life, having been president of the Otago University Rugby Football -Club for the past six years. Professor Andrew ; i$ survived by his widow, and two •sons, pne of whom is ,serving with the forces in the Middle East, the other residing in Malaya.
