NAVY LEAGUE NOTES

A letter has been received by the president, Mr J. Sutherland Ross, from Admiral Sir Sydney Fremantle, chairman of the Navy league Seafarers' Comforts Supply in London, in which Admiral Fremantle says: " Very many thanks for the three cases of comforts, which have just arrived (September). '«They are all very much appreciated. It would be simpler to send everything here and allow us to decide what is suitable for the Royal Navy and what is more suitable for the Merchant- Service. New Zealand, at any rate, is not backward in showing, in practical form, its appreciation of, the immensity of the debt which we owe to our seafarers." It is good news to hear of the safe arrival of this consignment in good time before the winter started. Another large number of garments is ready for packing, but there will not be so many sea-boot stockings as heretofore on account of the shortage of suitable wool. We hope, however, to have many more in a few months' time, as those working in the spinning centre are turning out more wool, chiefly for sea-boot stockings. These workers, with Mrs G. L. Ferguson in charge, have decided .not to "close down " for the holidays, and the committee would like to express its appreciation for their help, which will ensure a more adequate supply of the wool, which is so necessary, The Admiralty asks specially for polo-neck pullovers and sea-boot stockings of natural oiled wool.

Christmas parcels for the New Zealand minesweepers have been packed and.will be despatched very shortly. :"■ The last distribution of wool before Christmas will -be on December* 17. Notice of the last distribution will be given later. The following are thanked for gifts and work sent in during the week ended December 4: Allanton Guild, Arthur Street Standard 111 pupils, Brighton Service Club (I. Gibbs), Kaitangata Red Cross Society, Karitane Workers' Bee, North Otago Women's Club. Otekaike Special School, Gown Factory (Ross and Glendining), St. Matthew's Guild, Townswomen's Guild, Messrs Coulls, Somerville, Wilkie, Ltd., Hyndman's Ltd., McKenzies, "Two Girls" (Seacliff Bible class) "Anonymous," Mesdames Bagley, Beaumont, Bell, Broad. D. Duncan, F. A. Jones, J. R. McKenzie (Winton), Mason, Morgan, Ombler, Jackson Purdie., Ramsay, H. Stewart, Walmsley, and Misses R. Allen, G. Anderson, Brown. Fitzer. Graham, Kelly-Livingston, McAdam, Misses McPherson, Miller, Porteous, F. Shand, Spedding, C. Stenhouse, White, White (Lumsden), S. Wright (Houipapa), Messrs Lindsav (Waipori) and S. Smith.

When so many are being generous, thoughtful, and helpful towards the work of the Navy League, it is invidious to thank one more than another, but the committee would like to express appreciation of the gifts sent in by school children. These children can feel assured that their efforts are of real help to the seamen and are contributing towards the victory for which we all pray
