RACING AND TROTTING

RACING NEWS By Sentinel . FIXTURES December 6, B.—Woodville J.C. December 13.—Otaki R.C. December 13.—Hororata R.C' December 13.—Walpa R.C. December 26.—Walpukurau J.C. December 26. 27.—Taranaki J.C. December 26 27—Dunedin J.C D.J.C. Nominations.—Nominations for all events at the Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting close on Monday at 5 p.m. I Sister to Phar Lap.—Teuira, a nine-year-old New Zealand mare, claimed to be a sister to Phar Lap, was sold at the Newmarket bloodstock sales for 750gns. Returning to Form.—Serenata is showing signs of a return to form at Randwlck. At her best she would be dangerous in the Auckland Cup with 7.13, but it is understood that she is being prepared for summer handicaps at Bandwick.

Vincent Meeting.—The programme for the Vincent meeting on January 9 and 10 is in circulation. It shows that stakes amounting to £1435 and trophies valued at £4lO will be distributed. Nominations are due on December 29.

Eoy Bun as Hurdler.—Roy Bun opened his winning account as a hurdler in the Waitahuna Hurdles at Feilding, but the Riccarton candidate failed to complete a double in the Cheltenham Hurdles, being beaten into third place by Hagen and Colincamps. In several races leading up to his success Roy Bun had shown promise. With other members of M. Conza's team he will probably race on the flat on the West Coast circuit at Christmas, though he" will race at Woodville before returning to Riccarton.

Auckland Cup Candidate.—The Alison Cup win of Royevrus will bring the Surveyor horse into consideration for the Auckland Cup, a race in which he was only beaten by a head by Cheval de Volee in 1839. Royevrus is owned and trained by W. Townsend at' Cambridge, and the Alison Cup was his first win since early last season.

Cornish.—The five-year-old Cornish has been racing consistently well this season, and with 7.10 he should have prospects in the Auckland Cup. Cornish has a good-staying pedigree, being by Foxbridge from Miss Egypt, by Egypt from Pourparler, who was a full-sister to Bobrikoff. winner of the Auckland Clip with 8.8 in 1912. Cornish may prove a stayer too, because he should lose nothing through the influence of Foxbridge.

Winning Juveniles.—Of the three juveniles who got on the winning list at the Feilding meeting only one had figured in public previously. This was Foreign* Princess, half-sister to Foreign Coin. At her first outing in September she ran second to Indian Sign at Marton, and an early win was predicted for her. Fourths in the Hastings Stakes and the W.R.C. Wellesley Stakes, together with a third in the Karitane Handicap at Trentham, made up her record in the three succeeding outings, and it was not till last Saturday that she got on the winning list. From the ease with which she disposed of the opposition, however, she should go much further.

Early Favourites.—The early favourites for the Auckland Cup are the four-year-old Beau Leon, 9.0, and Lou Rosa, 8.3. When Beau Leon finished third last year to Beau Vite and Old Bill he had 7.4, or 51b under' weight-for-age, land this time he has exactly his scale weight. In the contest last year he was not handled with the best of judgment, and, in view of 'the fact that he is greatly improved this season, there is every reason to anticipate that he will, play a prominent part in the finish. Lou Rosa is nicely placed with 8.3, or 111 b under weight-for-age, and he, should take a lot of beating if he reaches the post fit. In spite of his failure in the Auckland Cup with 7.1 J, he proved one of the best staying three-year-olds last season. He has been unplaced in five starts this season, but is reported to be progressing well and, his connections are hopeful regarding his prospects. Lou Rosa will be ridden by N. R. McKenzie.

Contesting Sprint.—Rakanui. who is fourth top-weight in the Auckland Cup with 8.9, has still to prove that he can run two miles, although' he ran quite a creditable race in the New Zealand Cup. Later, he had tobe content with third place in the.;Cahtirbury Cup when mee.tr on better terms, and he was narrowly beaten by Gladyhev in the Metropolitan Handicap, these two events being over a mile and a-half. As he has lib more in the Auckland Cup than, in the New Zealand Cup, his prospects 'do . not read particularly bright, although no doubt he will be in the picture for the major portion of the journey. The Hunting Song gelding is being restricted to sprint racing at Woodville to-day

Wellington Programme.—The orogramme for the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting, which is to be staged at Trentham on January 20, 22, and 24, has been published in attractive booklet form. It discloses that the club is offering the big figure of £15,350 by way of stake money over the three days. The chief race on the opening day is the Wellington Cup. which will have attached to it a stake of £3500, inclusive of a trophy In the form of a gold cup valued at £l5O. The stake has thus been increased by £4OO over last year's prize, and it exceeds that offered in the Centennial year by £3OO The distance of the event has been increased to two miles, and the stake and distance are now identical with the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day.

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT Argument.—The angle from which you watched the finish would, of course, giye you that impression, but that does not prove that you were right

Starting Times at Waikato.—At theWatkato meeting to-day win-and-place bet* ting will be operated, and the starting times are:—ll.46. 12.30, 1.15, 2 p.m.. 2.45, 3.30. 4.15, 5 p.m. Improved Novice.—One of the most improved novice trotters in the Auckland district Is Roble. He is not very big, but he is solid and possesses a nice turn of speed.

Jock McGrath.—Jock McGrath will only need to begin smartly to get some of the money in the New Brighton Handicap.

A Good Sprinter.—Acuity is not what may be termed a solid two-miler, but he is smart over sprint distances, and he should get among the money at New Brighton to-day. Improving Trotter.—Royal Worthy is an improving trotter who looks certain to win again when he travels on an unbroken gait.

Jack Sprat.—Taking a line through his form at Forbury Park, Jack Sprat is entitled to be among the favourites for the Empire Handicap at New Brighton to-day.

Victory Handicap.—Springfield Globe and Haughty will probably carry the big money in the Victory Handicap at New Brighton to-day. Dark Hazard.—Dark Hazard gave a promising display in the chief two-mile race on the first day at Forbury Park, in which he ran second to Pleasant Guy. He raced as a pacer, and, in addition to starting well, he stayed on much better than when he raced in hopples prior to being converted to the trotting gait.

RICCARTON NOTES MORE HOLIDAY PLANS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 5. Mrs J. Campbell has definitely decided on a trip to Auckland with Wardress. The Lord Warden mare has 8.7 in the, Auckland Cup, a weight which gives her a good chance, after running third in the New Zealand Cup with 61b less, followed by a win in the Canterbury Cup. So far, Mis Campbell has not secured a J. W. Pankhurst has done a lot of work with his three-year-old Last Effort, by Man's Pal from Night Effort, and he looks ready to race. As a preliminary he will be taken to the Hurunui non-totali-sator meeting, after which it is Intended to do Dunedin, Wyndham, and, Invercargill. He is a well-grown' chestnut, and a really good sort, who should stay lafer on. R. In the meantime, the three horses are engaged at the Hororata meeting next week. R. Register is busy breaking in a two-year-old filly for Mr F. T. Buchanan. Dinah Dhu, who followed up promising form at Riccarton by winning at Ashburton, is in good order to go on now to further improvement. She should run well at Hororata, after which G. H. Murfitt,. jun.. may race her on the West Coast circuit.

Mrs J. Campbell has not made any plans yet for racing Myraid during the holidays, but a trip to the West Coast is a possibility. He is troubled with brittle feet, and this weakness makes him a difficult racing prospect. Transport is a difficult problem which has to be faced these days by trainers making plans for racing their teams, and the position has been made apparent lately in connection with holiday arrangements. To take four horses to the Manawatu meeting, commencing on December 26. H. Cutts will have to leave here, on Thursday, December 18, while after winding up the trip at the Walrarapa meeting on January 1 and 2, he will not reach home until Wednesday, January 7. / Gold Blaze, engaged at Hororata next week, is in J. McLean's team, being a recent arrival from the North Island. He is a good-looking chestnut, with an easy action, and he may develop into a smart performer, though he is five years old, with no form to commend him, though he did a bit of racing in the North Island as a three-year-old. His sire, Hoariri, with some brilliant sprint form, especially on soft tracks, was. by Antagonist from Country Picnic, the dam also of several . other good : winners, including Taneriri. and Mana iWhenua. ■ -
