GAELIC SOCIETY
MONTHLY MEETING The usual monthly meeting of the Gaelic Society was held last night in the Returned Services' Association Social Hall. Chief A. Matheson presided, supported by Chieftains Thomas Stuart, W. Keiln Cameron. R. Mcßae. W. R. McKenzie, Colin Macdonald, and W. H. McLeod. Since the November meeting there had passed away a great Highlander in the person of Mr T D. Burnett, M.P. for Temuka, and Piper Airdrie Stewart played " McArthur's Lament," the audience standing with bowed heads. Later ■in the evening the choir sang " Farewell to Funery "—the deceased's favourite Gaelic songs The chief extended a hearty welcome to Ex-chief Donald Munro, the oldest living member of the society/ Mr Munro. in reply, thanked the chief and members in Gaelic and in English for the warm welcome given him. He joined the society in the year 1886, and has been a member ever since. ' ■ As is customary, the Gaelic Choir opened the programme with the'; singing of " God Save the King" in Gaelic, followed by two items, " Soraidh slan le Fionn-Airidh ' and "Fear a chata." Other items on the programme were as follows:—Songs. " My Ain Folk" and 'My Prayer," Mrs M. Smith; seann truibhais, Misses Dorothy and Shirley Joyce; Gaelic songs, " O'nach till thu rulnn a Ris" and " Ho-ro mo nigheann donn," Misses A. and L. Kennedy and Mrs Hey; songs. " Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon " and " O Sing to Me the Auld Scotch Sangs," Mrs A. Matheson; reel o' tulloch. Misses Norma Nicholls, Doreen Reed, Joy Palenski, and Norma Stewart; bagpipe selection by Piper Airdrie Stewart; Gaelic songs, " Bruthaichean Glinn Braoin " and "Air Fal-al-al O ": songs, "Oh Why Left IMy Hame" and "Thou Hast Left Me Ever, Jamie," Mrs Robertson; Irish jig, Misses Doreen Reed and Joy Palenski; Gaelic song, "An t'Eilean Miuleach " and " Gun Chrodh gun Sighean," Mrs A. McLennan; a selection 6n the national instrument by Piper Airdrie Stewart.
