BAY OF PLENTY SEAT
ONLY TWO NOMINATIONS » OPENING OF CAMPAIGN (Special) AUCKLAND, Nov. 27. Only two nominations for the by-elec-tion for the Bay of Plenty seat in the House of Representatives, made necessary by the death on active service of Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist, had been received when the time for making them closed at noon yesterday. The National Party has nominated Mr W. Sullivan, a former Mayor of Whakatane, and the Government candidate is Mr C. Mills, of Gisborne. The by-election will be held on Saturday, December 13. "People now understand better what the present Government stands for," said Mr Sullivan, opening his campaign in Te Araroa Mr Sullivan said the Labour policy was one of straight-out Socialism aiming to bring under State control the affairs of every individual in the country. The by-election was a test case. It would show whether the people approved of Socialism or wanted the Government to put the brakes on. Mr Mills opened his campaign at Opotiki last night. He was supported by the Minister of Health. Mr A. H. Nordmeyer. Mr Mills contrasted present conditions with those in the depression years, and claimed that many people had been brought to well-being as a result of the Labour Government's policy. Mr Nordmeyer spoke at length on the medical service, and said that the attitude of the medical profession in recent months was nothing less than childish. It would be much simpler for the doc tors to claim their fees direct from ths State. It was the intention of the Government, he added, to go further with its health schemes.
