SALESMAN BEFORE COURT Stated by the prosecution to have struck a lamp-post in a locality which had not yet been ascertained. Harry George Newey, aged 35, a property salesman appeared before Mr H.-J. Dixon. SM in the City Police Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to having been intoxicated while in charge of a motor Senior Sergeant Vaughan said that on the previous evening the accused had been seen by a traffic inspector driving along King street. The inspector who noticed that his car was. badly damaged, stopped him and the accused, who was under the influence of liquor, said that he had run into a lamp-post. Ihe police had not vet discovered where this accident took place. The accused was medically examined at the police station and was certified as being unfit to drive a MrW. J. Meade, who appeared for Newey explained that the accused was not a drinking man. He had, however, had tea at a friend's place, where he had consumed a certain amount of liquor There was no sur.gestion of speeding, and in view of this circumstance and the fact that cancellation of the accused's licence! would be a serious matter for him, counsel asked the court lo deal with him as leniently as possible. A fine of £2O with medical expenses (£1 Is) was imposed. The accuseds licence was cancelled, and he was prohibited from holding another for vi months.
