THE EARTHQUAKE

PROBABLE EPICENTRE OFF PORTUGUESE COAST (Rec. 7 p.m.) LISBON, Nov. 26. The epicentre of yesterday's great earthquake is believed to be about 500 miles off the Portuguese coast. Another tremor was felt in Lisbon this morning. RECORDED IN DOMINION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. An earthquake of great severity was recorded on the instruments at the Dominion Observatory. The distance from Wellington is computed at 11.000 miles. The first tracings were at 6.24 a.m. yesterday, and a continuous record was traced for nearly three hours. If the centre of the earthquake was anywhere near an inhabited land mass the movement is considered as bound to have had a very destructive effect. It may, however, have occurred under the sea, and in«that event nothing more will be heard of it.
