WOMEN’S WAR SERVICE AUXILIARY

Nearly 200 members of the W.W.S.A. “ keep fit ” classes exercised, danced, sang, supped, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the combined end-of-the-year “ wind-up class" which was held J at the Early Settlers' Hall on Monday evening. Miss Mary Martin, physical welfare and recreation officer for Otago, who had procured leaders for the classes, led the exercises and dancing; while a stage programme of music and dancing was provided by members themselves. each one of the six classes involved providing one item. Almost all the 180 members had come prepared for active exercise, and irrespective of age or physique, they joined in with a will, although the hall could barely provide room for so large a number. The enthusiastic and spirited rendering of the folk dances had to be seen to be believed, and proved beyond doubt that even elderly women can really enjoy as well as benefit from well-chosen exercises.

The function, which was under the auspices of the Canteen Sub-commit-tee of the W.W.S.A., was attended by Mrs Mackie Begg. who spoke in appreciation of the wonderful progress the classes had made during the three months of their existence, and also by Professor Strong and other members of the Canteen Sub-committee, who' gave everyone a pleasant surprise by including supper in the evening’s programme. It is hoped to hold similar functions next year.
