RECENT ACQUISITIONS MODEL OF WAIRAU MASSACRE A model of the scene of the Watrau massacre is among the specimens recently acquired by the Otago Museum. It displays in exact detail the district in which the event took place and the positions in which the bodies of the men were found. Portraits of Te Rauparaha and Rangihaeta. the Maori chiefs involved in the dispute, and a complete history _of the massacre accompany the exhibit.
Other interesting specimens are several wooden carvings from Java and Bali brought from the collection of Mr A. R. Richardson, two silver Balinese bowls; and a lamp shade carved from a coconut shell. A stone axe was presented to the museum some little time ago by the late Mr E. Henry, of Dunedin. who spent several years in New Guinea. Mr Henry was killed in Crete. Dr J. C. Lopdell has given several models of canoes and some fine kava cups from Vavau. Mr W Downie Stewart has presented an unusuallv fine Southland .stone adze and Miss M. Downie Stewart a birchbark box ornamented in the style of Indians of eastern Canada.
