Smart Maiden.—One of the smartest maidens seen in the south for a long time is Sally Lunn, who scamperea home in a division of the maiden race at Invercargill (says the Herald). She was bred by the late Dr Robertson, of Tapaniii. and is a half-sister to Peony Rose * ? t unn wa " a trifle fortunate at the start, but she is undeniably very smart and promises to go a long way. Out for a Spell.—Arabian Night hds been turned out. and will be spelled till after Christmas, when he will be prepared to resume racing in the ■ autumn. The Lord Quex three-year-old has not shown any outstanding form since he won a race in August. He gave a creditable showing in the Derby, however, and should benefit by age. He should become a eood staying prospect next season

Grilse for Trentham.—Grilse, who won the Wielcome Stakes' in her only start at Riccarton, is being given a spell. Her owner. Mr E. E. Steele, will not hurry her. and she will not be raced during the holiday period. Her trainer hopes to have her at her best for suitable races at the Wellington Club's meeting in January Jockey's Kstate.—W. F. Elliot, the jockey who rode Phar Lap to victory in the Agua Caliente Handicap in 1932, and who 1 died in Victoria after a long illness, left estate valued at £4367. For several years Elliot was a leading jockey in Australia, and he twica headed the list of winning riders in Victoria Stake Distribution.—With 291 runners South Island stables won £3890 of the stake money at the Canterbury spring meeting, while the North Island, with 102 runners, won £7410. Visitors filled first and second places in the New Zealand Cup. all three places in the Metropolitan Handicap, and a northern representative also won the Derby. Crooner's Racing Colours.—A livery oi pale blue jacket, yellow and red hooped sleeves, yellow cap, pale blue shoulder straps, bow tie of blue and yellow, and tassel of the same colours on his cap made A Podmore the envy of all the other jockeys at Victoria Park. These are the colours registered b.v the American Mr Bing Crosby, and they were carried lo victory in the Juvenile Stakes at Victoria Park last Wednesday by Miss Hua. The shoulder straps, tie and tassel were frowned upon b.v the Australian Jockey Club officials, however, these adornments being banned by the parent body, and G. F. Corrie. trainer of the filly, was asked to take the colours to the Australian Jockey Club office for inspection Change of Luck.—Although he raced several horses last season, it was not until the first day of the Waikato Racing Club's spring meeting at Te Rapa that Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P., reached the winning list, Laughing Fox. who finished first in the Waimangu Stakes at Rotorua last February, but was placed second owing to interference with Natal, providing Mr Goosman with his first success by winning the second division of the Trial Stakes. It was a welcome change of luck, which was continued when Glen Connell and Town Survey also won at the meeting in the same colours. The victories of Lauehing Fox, Town Survey and Glen Connell brought Mr Goosman's winnings at the meeting to £714 13s 6d. Laughing Fox and Town Survey are trained by A. Winder, and Glen Connell by J. L. Muir. The two-year-old Representative, who races in the same interest and was second to Indian Princess in the Hopeful Stakes at Ellerslie last week i? trained at Takanini by F Smith

Eulogist.—J. H Prosser has a trip to Auckland in view with Eulogist. He showed good form to win the Criterion Handicap at Riccarton recently, and with a little luck would have been closer up than third in the Members' Handicap on the last day. His northern engagements Include the Auckland Cup, and. though he has not done any racing over long journeys, he may be allowed to take his chance in the two-mile event provided he trains on. Eulogist was lame during the week and in the meantime it is doubtful whether he will race at Ashburton.

FORBURY PARK MEETING ACCEPTANCES FOR FIRST DAY Following arc the acceptances lor the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on November 29: ARTILLERY HANDICAP.

CERTISSIMUS ENGAGED BRILLIANT YOUNG TROTTER The Forbury Park Trotting Club’s spring meeting will come up for decision on Saturday. November 2!), and Monday, December 1. The fields for the first meeting of the club’s 1941-42 season are good, and with the majority of the runners at the top of their form the racing promises to reach a high standard. The club will provide new facilities for the convenience of investors, and for the first time at Forbury Park meetings, wln-and-place tickets will be sold at all selling windows, while at the “ pay-out ” windows both win-and-place tickets will be cashed. The dividend indicator will also give added interest to the betting. Though he has been seen in action at Forbury Park before, the champion trotter. Certissimus,. will be the centre of great interest, as he will be racing against strong opposition, which is likely to make this young trotter display his top form. Two other performers in Walter Moore and Springfield Globe will also claim the interest of enthusiasts. The first event is timed to start at 12.30 p.m. each dav, and a frequent tram and bus service will run direct to the course gates Members of his Majesty’s Forces (in uniform) will be admitted free, but they must enter by the horse gate in Victoria road or the Richardson street gate.

RICCARTON NOTES HARD TRACKS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 24. The trainers at Riccarton would welcome a good fall of rain, as the tracks have become very hard. There will be a lot of sore horses unless a change in the conditions comes soon. Roy Bun will go north to-morrow night with M. Conza in charge, to compete in the hurdle races at Feilding. He'' locks well, after his recent racing. Articulate, by Rabbi from Babel, the dam of Wild Talk, was hard to manage when he came to Riccarton. R. Register took him in hand, with good results, as he became v.ery quiet. He was to have gone to Oamaru. to be trained by T. Hobbs, but a mishap has caused a change of plans. He was very lame in the near hind leg after being worked at the end of last week, and he will have to by spelled The three-year-old Lord Dundas has been sent back to his owner. F. D. Jones trained him for Mr C. Holdsworth, who had him on lease. He showed early speed, and looked like going on to useful form, but he did not race up to expectations, so rt was decided not to persevere with him. Nightdress showed promising form in his early races over hurdles this season, but he has disappointed several times lately He is quite sound, but he appears to have trained off. so S. Barr has decided to give him a spell. He will be allowed to run out for a few months, and when freshened up he will be got ready to resume racing over hurdles next winter. S Barr expects to have three of his team for southern holiday racing. Recollection. Sham Boy, and the two-year-old Prince Leighon will start off at the Dunedin meeting after which the two-year-old will return home, while the other pair may eo on to Wvndham and Invercargill T H Gillett is keeping Palfrey busy, and he may take the Man’s Pal colt to Auckland, where the Great Northern Derbv will be among his engagements. There arc two others in the stable who are also possibles for the trip. The hurdler Dividend is very forward, and there will be a race each day to suit him Doria. who had to be eased up on the eve of the Grand National meeting, has been in easy exercise tor some time, and it is possible she will be forward enough for the trip. General entries are due at the end ot next week, and Gillett should know more about her prospects by then. M. Conza has a big team in work, and he hopes to have eight horses for the West Coast holiday circuit. They are Rov Bun. Philibun, Skyrena, Rebel Lady. Te Maarl. Caretaker. Joconta. and The Flying Fortress. A McMullan has Mauretania and Lights Out in strong work at present, and this pair, possibly accompanied by Flame Queen, will be his team tor the Wesl Coast in the holidays. TROTTING NOTES

December 27 30 31.—Auckland T.C. At Their Best. —The track and lawns at Forbury Park looked at their best yesterday, and if there is no break in the weather fast times will be recorded on Saturday and Monday. One From Southland.—Viscosa, one or the Southland team engaged at Forbury Park, is credited with being able to step a smart gait, and looks nicely piacec 1 on the limit in the Freyberg Handicap. Changes of Stables.—Five pacers and (rotters recently purchased in the South Island have arrived in Auckland. They are Channel Fleet, by Man o' War— Needles and Princess Beverley, by Native King—Beverley Audubon, who have joined F. J. Smith's stable; Jimmy Drusus, by Drusus—Sonoma Harvester mare, to Iy. J. Mahoney; Quite True, by Quite Sure — Lady Orange, to I. R. Morrison; and Certify, by Quite Sure—Azaleas, to E. N. Kennerley. The maiden trotter Northern Surprise, half-brother to Mali Jong, left Auckland on Wednesday for Christchurch to join J. Bryce's stable. Family of Roans.—While she was unsuccessful in her only race as a three-year-old, and unplaced in nine starts the following season, Mah Jong has since made ample amends. At five years Mah Jong contested eight races for three firsls, I wo seconds and two thirds. Last

year she scored once in four starts, and this season her record is three firsts and a second in five races. The two successes of Mah Jong at Addington brought her earnings up to £1445. Mah Jong is bred on sound lines, being by Maxegin, son of Judge Maxey, from Katute, by Nelson Bingen from Muricata. by Mauritius, son of Bingen, sire of 1 Nelson Bingen. Ocean Wave, a roan I mare by Rothschild, left three of the same colour, Oceanic, Muricata and Dan Dillon. Muricata produced Taraire. a good winner in New Zealand and West Australia, and Katute. both roans, and Mali Jong represents the family colour. A Good Stayer.—Although he was second in the i 939 Invercargill Trotting Cup and third soon afterward in the Winton Trotting. Cup Handicap, Katene was not successful at two miles until he won the R. T. Reid Memorial Handicap at Claudelands. Katene impressed by his determined final run, and in going 4.27 3-5 off 4.36 registered his best time for the distance. At Winton, Katene ran 4.28 2-5. Katene was purchased in the south by Mrs L. Ebbett, in whose colours he won the New Year Handicap at Epsom last December. Sold before the present, season to Messrs E. Keller and M. Brandt. Katene won the Electric Handicap at Epsom last month., and. with his success at Claudelands. has won £445 for his new owners. Katene, by his win, qualified for the Auckland Trotting Cup on December 27. Being a good stayer, he should not be without prospects. The Dominion Handicap.—Certissimus will probably go out a hot favourite for the Dominion Handicap at the Forbuiy Park Trotting Club's meeting, and will be subjected to the stiffest task of his career. He will meet Within, winner of three races this season, and one of the best of her gait racing at the present time. Her performance to succeed in the Holmwood Handicap on the third day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's spring meeting was impres- , sive. From 48 yards behind she was in fifth place with a round to go, and outstayed and , outsoed Josedale Dictator. Ga'nton and Mah Jong over the last furlong Her time for the mile and five furlongs was 3min 32 2-ssec. This is equivalent to 3min 16 2-ssec for one mile and a-half.
