BALCLUTHA A. and P. Show. —Entries for the Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society's show, to be held at Balclutha on Friday, total 794, compared with 769 last year. The increases are in the section for horses, and in the baking and butter departments. Bowling. —Eight teams took part in a fours tournament conducted by the Balclutha Bowling Club on Saturday. A rink skipped by J. Montgomerie won the three games outright. In a doubles tournament on the Kaitangata green, in which 24 players took part, Messrs R. Carson and W. McGhie were the winners. Lawn Tennis.—The South Otago High School team defeated Balclutha All on the Balclutha courts on Saturday by 11 sets (115 games) to 5 sets (92 games). Balclutha AI visited Kaitangata and won by 12 sets (120 games) to 4 sets (71 games). River Trust.—The monthly meeting of the Lower Clutha River Trust, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs J. W. Fenton, W. H. S. Willocks, J. F. Bell, P. Dippie, A. A. Jensen and E'. B. Lothian. Mr Fenton was voted to the chair. The financial report showed receipts at £1967 lis 3d, and expenditure £915 4s lOd. Outstanding rates were £4260 19s Bd, and freights £4O lis 9d.—The secretary of the Waimakarirl River Trust, Christchurch, advised that a conference of South Island representatives had been arranged for November 27 to discuss the Rivers Control Bill. It was decided to appoint Messrs J. W. Fenton and A. McD. Miller (engineer) to represent the trust. —Mr David Finch wrote about the condition of the drain along the Summerhill road adjoining his property, and it was decided to take th<* view that the Bruce County Council was the responsible body.—Messrs Stewart and Kelly wrote on behalf of Thomas Treacy, asking for access to a property at Greenfield consisting of an island in the river. It was decided that this also was a matter for the Bruce County Council, which collected the rates.—The town clerk of Balclutha wrote in connection with fencing erected by the trust, which was obstructing a road at the river embankment. The letter was received, no action to be taken. —The engineer in his report drew attention to the unjustifiably alarmist rumours that came over the radio on Wednesday night, and advised that the matter should be taken up with the proper authorities. —Mr Dippie related the experiences of the settlers at Paretai, and said that much rteedless alarm had been caused.—lt was decided to endorse Mr Miller's explanation of the action which he had taken, and to authorise him to take steps to see that in future only official figures were broadcast.
