OTAGO HARBOUR

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago Harbour Board was held last night, Mr R. S. Thompson presiding. There were also present Messrs W. Begg, A. Mcßae, J. W. Munro, M.P., F. E. Tyson, D. F. H. Sharpe. J. B. Waters, J. H. Duncan, H. S. Watson, J. T. Knewstubb and W. R. Clarke. Donation The board made its usual annual donation of £3 3s to the Y.M.C.A. Lighted Beacons The Marine Department advised that the Minister had sanctioned the establishment of two lighted beacons which the board proposed to erect to mark the new channel at the harbour entrance.—Noted. Finance The secretary reported that the revenue for October amounted to £11,899, the figures for the corresponding months in previous years being:—l94o, £15.163; 1939. £14.976; 1938, £14,121; 1937, £14,882. Expenditure for October totalled £14,361, the comparative figures being:—l94o, £14,406; 1939. £18,660; 1938. £17,410: 1937, £14.943. The credit balance stood at £18.602 14s 7d. Tenders The tender of. the Port Chalmers Marine Repair Works, the only tenderer, was accepted for the overhaul of the dredge Otakou. The tender of Mr R. Leftwich was accepted for the cleaning and painting of the dredge. Engineer's Report The engineer. Mr McG. Wilkie reported that during October the Otakou had dredged 28 loads, taking 2480 hopper yards of development dredging and 38,480 yards of maintenance dredging. The Vulcan had been engaged in dredging flotation for the floating line, the material being dumped into the South Endowment. The suction pipe was damaged on October 14. necessitating extensive repairs. The work of redecking and strengthening the north side of George street pier was continued. Pile driving operations were commenced again at the beginning of. this month on the South Endowment area in connection with the Wilkie road sewer and by November 14 eight piles had been driven. The beacons marking the sailing course for the new channel had been erected, and preparations were now being ntade to change over the leading lights. Other maintenance work carried out was also detailed by the engineer, whose report was adopted.
