BATTLE FOR MOSCOW GERMANS NEARER CITY (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 28. The Germans, according to the Vichy radio, are, about 20 miles from Moscow. The Russians are maintaining successful counter attacks, hammering at the Germans outside Moscow, says the Moscow radio, which adds that hour after hour hand-to-hand fighting is going on, and the. Germans are not only being held, but pushed back at one or two points. The railway station and electric power station in one town changed hands several times, until finally the Russians ousted the enemy in a succession of bayonet charges. The radio, referring to Kalinin, says a : great struggle for Kalinin has been raging for 10 days and nights without respite in rain and appalling weather. House-to-house and street-to-street fighting is still proceeding. KHARKOV ENDANGERED RUSSIAN WITHDRAWAL; (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 28. The Moscow radio announced that under pressure of fresh German reinforcements near Kharkov Soviet troops had carried out a slight with£* drawal and the town is now endan£ gered. German losses were exceptionally heavy, and on one day alone on the approaches to Kharkov about 3500 enemy officers and men were killed and wounded. AIR RAIDS ON ITALY BRITISH AIRCRAFT ■ LONDON; jOct. 28., '' An Italian communique states that British aircraft dropped bombs at two places on the “ toe ” of Italy in daylight yesterday and that yet another raid was carried out on Benghazi. ’
