The bulk of the German forces are concentrated on a front running from Rzhev, or Rjev (south-east of the Valdai Hills), to Vyazma, Bryansk and Orel, but dangerous drives are being made northwards from Bryansk and Orel towards Kaluga and Tula. South of Orel is Kursk, the objective of the northern flank of the German armies operating in the Ukraine.
