MILITARY DEFAULTERS
CAMPS READY NEXT MONTH PROVISION OF DEVELOPMENT WORK CO.C.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. An announcement that, the first of the defaulters’ detention camps, the establishment of which was being actively undertaken, would be ready for occupation early next month was made by the Minister of National Service, Mr R. Semple, replying to an urgent question asked in the House of Representatives to-night by Mr W. J Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo). “ The inmates,” Mr Semple said, " will be engaged in breaking in land for settlement, roadmaking, tree planting, drainage, farming and in other work in connection with the maintenance of the camp.” Emphatic “Noes” were heard from the Government benches when the second part of Mr Broadfoot's question was read. He asked if the Minister would divest the defaulters of their civil rights for at least 15 years. Mr Semple said the answer was “ No.” Mr Broadfoot: They don’t risk their lives.
Mr E. P. Meachen (Govt., Marlborough): Did you? Mr Broadfoot; A lot of yours didn’t. The Speaker: Order! Order!
