THE BULGARIANS
AN UNCONFIRMED REPORT MOBILISATION ORDERED LONDON, Oct. 12. According to reports received in Ankara from the Turkish frontier, general mobilisation has been ordered in Bulgaria with the ringing of church Dells and the reading of proclamations in the streets: These reports cannot be confirmed in Ankara, however. It is thought, in view of the recent Ankara and Berlin statement about Turkish-German friendship, that such mobilisation is not directed against Turkey, but that Hitler will use the Bulgarians to hold positions on the Russian front, or, more probably, keep them in her occupied countries, especially Jugoslavia. This report is yet another indication that Hitler is throwing everything available into the Russian offensive. Mobilisation of the Bulgars would mean that about 20 divisions would be called up. All communications between Turkey and Bulgaria are cut off. Efforts to telephone Sofia from Ankara met with announcements that " all lines between Turkey and Europe are down." A LATER MESSAGE THE REPORT DENIED (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 13. Reports of mobilisation in Bulgaria were denied when neutral correspondents in Ankara contacted Sofia after | telephonic communication was re- | established.
