SLUM CONDITIONS
WORST AREAS IN DUNEDIN OPINION OF MR J. A. LEE (0.C.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 8. "I still think that the worst slum conditions are in Dunedin," said Mr J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn) during the second reading debate on the Auckland Community Welfare Centre and the Auckland City Empowering Bill in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Lee had been referring to conditions in Freeman's Bay. Auckland, where the centre is to be located, and said that it was impossible in any year to build enough homes to accommodate people living'in slums or poor houses. Mentioning Dunedin, Mr Lee said that in years gone by Scots had purchased land and built several houses close together and well back on the sections. They were now reached by allcvs. which contributed to Ihe conditions he had described.
