INCOME TAX DEMANDS

TO THE EDITOR Sir.—l wonder how many of your readers have had the unenviable experience which I. along with many others in this community, have had of receiving a demand for income tax which has already been paid. As there has almost been an epidemic of such demands, your readers need not be unduly perturbed should they be honoured in this respect. One particularly scandalous case is that of a man who received a demand for the returns of income tax for the year 1931. After recovering somewhat from the shock, he searched his records to find that payment had been duly forwarded in 1931. and on notifying the department was tendered an apology. One wonders what would have happened to that man had he not been able to produce those proofs. Can you tell me. has the department the right to claim income after the lapse of 10 years? One wonders what is behind this business. Is it carelessness or super-carefulness or iust one of the " new Socialist liberties" that are being granted to Dr North and others who have sons overseas. —I am. etc., Sufficiently Taxed Oamaru. October 6.
