BOOKMAKER FINED

INTOXICATED IN CAR HEAVY PENALTY IMPOSED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. Pleading guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a car and with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, John Edwin Shore, aged 44, a motorman, was fined by the magistrate (Mr J. L. Stout) £25 on the first charge and £SO on the other. His driving licence was cancelled for 12 months. The police statement was that Shore, on stopping his car after hitting a kerb, was seen by a constable to be obviously drunk. He also had in his possession a quantity of betting material, and admitted that in the previous week he bad taken £3O in bets. He said he was only an agent for a bookmaker on a commission basis.
