HOME GUARD OFFICERS
EXAMINATION PROPOSAL ALLEGED CAUSE OF DISCONTENT (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 24. “ is the Minister aware of a certain amount of discontent in the Home Guard because certain commanders are proposing to enforce a form of examination on the junior officers under their command, and will he take immediate steps to prevent the enforcement of what is considered an unnecessary examination? ” asked Mr R. McKeen (Govt, Wellington South) in the House of Representatives this afternoon in a question addressed to the Minister of Defence. Mr F. Jones. Mr McKeen added that when the Home Guard was first formed the persons appointed as officers were usually men who held commissions during the last war. Recently, when the movement was reorganised, the commanding officers were in every instance promoted to higher rank without having to undergo an examination.
