PRICE OF CANDLES

MAXIMUM RETAIL RATES ORDER ISSUED BY TRIBUNAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. The Price Tribunal slated to-day that it had investigated the price position of New Zealand-manufactured candles, and it had found that pricesthroughout New Zealand varied considerably. Because, of the higher landed cost of wax. prices might tend to rise, and the time was opportune, therefore, to fix Dominion-wide prices which would be fair to the retailer and the consumer alike. “It should be pointed out," the tribunal stated, “that the prices which have been fixed by the order are the maximum prices only. The prices are 3s 2d per 11b packet of six candles, and 2£d per candle for less than packet lots. Having regard to the varying prices at. present ruling, it is felt that on an overall basis the operation of the new maximum price level fixed by the order, while fair to retailers generally, will benefit the public."
