BOARD’S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools' Board was held yesterday and was attended by Mr W. R. Brugh (chairman), Bishop Fitchett, Mrs D G. McMillan, Messrs J C. H. Somerville, D, C. Cameron, and F H. Campbell. The Director of Education (Dr C. E. Beeby) wrote advising that the following expenditure had been approved out of endowment income: Replacing of sinks and taps in the laboratory at the Otago Boys’ High School, £BB 10s; an additional bicycle shelter at the Otago Boys’ High School, £B7 10s; and

additional painting at King's High School, £B4. —Noted. In reply to a leltei from the board, ■which included a suggestion from the principal of the Girls’ High School (Miss M. H. M. King) that a doctor should be employed at her school to carry out regular medical inspection of first-year pupils, and careful watching of others known to have defects, the Director of Education stated that there was little likelihood of any extension of the school medical service to secondary schools foi some little time to come, and that the department was not prepared at present to make any contribution towards the cost of employing a doctor as suggested by Miss King (t was pointed out that this work was at present being done in some schools under arrangements

made by the school authorities with doctors who were old pupils of the school, and did the work voluntarily’. The dates of the terms for 1942 were approved as follows: First term, Monday, February 2, to Friday, May 8 (14 weeks); second term, Tuesday, May 28, to Friday, August 21 (12 weeks 4 days); third term, Tuesday, September 15, to Friday, December 11 (12 weeks 4 days).
