MAORI CONCERT

OVER £lO4 COLLECTED RELIEF OF DISTRESS IN GREAT BRITAIN The concert given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last night by the Karitane Maori party raised the sum of £ 104 for the Relief pf Distress Fund in Great Britain. This was by no means the only clairii ot in .- concert to commendation, for the packed house was aroused to a high t - enthusiasm over the whole lengthy programme, and deservedly so, lor tne quality of the voices and the precision of the’ traditional action numbers could not be gainsaid. It was an occasion on which Maori talent was revealed m many ways, and all of them attractive. Dressed in costume, and performing on a stage cleverly designed to resemble a Maori pa, the Karitarie party of 37, the majority of whom were women, gave as their principal item a bracket of patriotic songs, the chief of which was the popular “Let’s Get Together.” Symbolic of the determination of Great-Britain and America to win the war, and of the friendship existing between the two count this song was a great success, and altogether the night was a most enjoyable one. Mr M. Taiaroa was the chairman for the concert, which was organised by Mr J- Himburg, and Mrs Bob Parata was the pianist. The Muriel Caddie Piano-accordion Band presented items prior to the commencement of the concert, and during the interval. Besides the special stage presentation. the items given by the'entire party were a war song and haka entitled “Whakabapa noa mai ’ action songs—“Haere mai e nga iwii” “K-m Ora Huirapa,” “Aue aue te Mamae. “Aue, mama.’’ “Uia mai,” “Tukituki, “Powhiri.” “Papakura,” “Whakarongo ake au ’* and “ Hei Aha Kei Taku Uma”: a haka song. “Pakia Kia Rite”; a haka. “Te Iwi e Ngunguru Nei ’; and two choruses. “Po Atarau ” and “Arohanui.” The selection of patriotic songs sung by the party were the special “Let’s Get Together," “Tnerel; Always be an England," and “Maori Battalion," The girls of the party presented a poi dance and song. “ Haere ra e Hine Moa”: a poi dance, “Hoki Hoki Tonu Mai and a poi waka, long poi. and group poi. The warriors gave a haka. “Tau Ka Tau.” Individual items were presented b> Rongo and Mana Te, Tau (duet. “ Haere Ra”). Ruti Hipi (song and chorus. “E Pari Ra”). Riki Td TaU (song. “Haere Tonu”). and R. Parata (song and chorus).
