DEBT SLAVERY

FINANCE BILL ATTACKED (0.C.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. “If we put the world in pawn to debt it will turn to the miracle men and Hitlers will march again,” said Mr J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn), when speaking during the second reading debate on the Finance Bill in the House of Representatives to-night. “ How much democracy is there,” he asked, “ if we pile up debt services of £30,000,000 a year and say that they are sacred? ” The world was faced with such a catastrophic fall in prices as would drive it into the pit of revolution or Fascism, said Mr Lee, who described the Finance Bill as a grandchildren’s charter for debt slavery. He said that the democracies could not win the war on the basis of defeating Hitler only. If the war was won and debt was piled up for future generations, then democracy was dead.
