BURNSIDE STOCK SALE

BEEF VALUES FIRM % SHEEP IN OVER-SUPPLY A shortage of cattle and an oyersupply of sheep at the Burnside stock sale yesterday .resulted in a sharp rise In the price for beef, while mutton values cased considerably. Fat cattle had a small entry of 186 head, the quality generally being good. Several consignments of prime heavy bullocks were forward, with a fair penning :t)f good cows and heifers. There 'were fewer rough cows. The market opened at late rates, but there was soon a firming of 30s per head for ox beef, and 20s for cows and heifers, the sale being a keen one. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £23 12s 6d, prime heavy £2O 2s 6d to £2l 12s 6d, prime £l7 7s 6d to £l9 2s 6d, medium £l3 12s 6d to £ls 7s 6d, light to £l2 12s 6d. extra prime cows and heifers to £ls 7s 6d, prime £l2 12s 6d to £l3 12s 6d, medium £9 7s 6d to £lO 12s 6d. and light to £7 17s 6d. A heavy entry of 2100 fat sheep, following on the large yarding of last week, proved too many for butchers* requirements. The quantity was the best for some time, prime heavy ewes being forward in large numbers. Wethers of all classes were much more plentiful. Hoggets were in short supply, and sold well. From the outset ewes of all classes were 2s to 2s 6d lower, with the sale steady throughout. Wethers were erratic, but generally were 2s down, especially finewcolled sheep showing age. Extra prime wethers realised to 365. prime 29s to" 32s 6d, medium 25s 9d to 27s 6d. light to 245, extra prime young ewes to 265. prime ewes 20s 6d ' to 23s 9d, medium 16s to 17s, and light td'‘ 14s 6d. Store cattle again* had' a very small yarding of nondescript sorts, with no ouotable lines. i. -', ' ; . 'An average yarding of baconers and porkers made late rates.' Best baconers brought to £4, 19S, and best porkers to £3 14s Store pigs were in poor demand. About 40 dairy cows were penned. The demand was for good springers, which htade to £l2 10s. A very small entry of vealers found an exceptionally keen sale for all grades. AGENTS’ REPORTS ■ FAT CATTLE ■ National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand. Ltd.; sold: For A.
