MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting ol the Clutha County Council was held yesterday. Cr W. J. McKenzie presided, and also present were Crs Thomas Maginness; J. K. Ross, A. T. Harris, A. V. King, J. W Dunn, Robert Brown, W. S. Thomson, and C F. Shaw. The rates struck at the preceding meeting were confirmed. The clerk reported that receipts during the month had amounted to £1575 9s 9d, and expenditure had totalled £5713 18s Although a debit balance of £4138 8s 3d was shown in the statement, about £SOOO would shortly be received oy the council, so that the financial position was better than at this time in previous years. , The district railways engineei ai Invercargill (Mr G. W. Beck) wrote advising that the further representations by the council regarding a warning device at the crossing at Waiwera had been considered, but it was regretted that no further action could be taken in the meantime.—lt was decided to make representations to Mr J. A. Roy, M.P.. on thp matter of having such a device erected Mr J. A. Roy. M.P.. wrote advising that he had received a letter from an Owaka resident suggesting that a bulldozer would be the best means of forming a road to his property. Mr Roy advised that a bulldozer would shortly be made available ir> thai district.— Receivpd Annual Hospital Levy The South Otago Hospital Board wrote advising that the council's proportion of the annual levy amounted to £5775 lis 2d. —The clerk reported that the previous levy had been £6068 6s. The Lands and Survey Department advised that no authority existed to grant permission to build along the road reserve at the Pomahaka River.—The application by the Otago Anglers* Association to build a permanent hut on this area in commemoration of the jubilee year was granted, the term of the tenure to be at the pleasure of the council. A petition signed by 18 ratepayers of the Waipahi district and forwarded by the loca' branch of the Farmers" Union, requested that all roads in that area should be iretalled in accordance with the requirements of the Public Works Department, as the residents desired that a rural delivery should be inaugurated to save petrol.—The petition was received. It was decided to make a grant ol £lO towards the cost of the clearing of gorse from the Port Molyneux Cemetery, and another £lO for the same work a* the Owaka Cemetery The county engineer reported that a further 10,000 pinus insignis trees had been planted on the Port Molyneux reserve, and a rabbit-proof fence had been completed along the south boundary, and part of the east boundary.

Replacement of Bridges It was decided to take steps to make Wylie's bridge, ovei the Puerua Rivet, temporarily safe foj wheel traffic, and the engineer was requested to make a report on the replacement of the existing structure.—The engineer was also instructed to inspect the bridge over the Omaru Stream, and to submit a report with a view to its replacement. The Superintendent of Police at Dunedin (Mr P. J. O'Hara) wrote advising that no trace of the petrol that was miss» ing from the Owaka depot had been found.—The letter was received, and the clerk pointed out that all drums consigned to this depot would now be sealed. The ranger reported that 33 head of wandering stock had been found on roads in the county.
