STREET ACCIDENTS
TO THE EDITOR Sir,—l wish to draw , attention to the dangerous nature of. the road traffic, from all junction, Of Maitland street. Frihces street and Main South road. ' Having lived here for eight vears I have seen many an accident, some fatal and many a “near miss.” Just a few days ago I ,witnessed a fine young lady lying on the roadway, her life ebbing away-r-a .very sad sight indeed. Now in the period; of years I mention Cumberland street has been flood-lighted, the Exchange and. the junction of Princes street and Anderson's Bay road have been extra lighted, and the number of traffic policemen has been increased from one to three at the Exchange, from none to one at Cargill’s corner, and from none to one at the Bank of New Zealand corner, and at the Octagon north and south, but Maitland street junction has remained, as you were all the time. Regarding accidents, this junction holds a bad record, and it is lohg overdue for its traffic police, and also, for its marked pedestrian crossings. A comparison of the accident records of the several points mentioned proves that the best deterrent to speeding and careless road-hogs is the live policeman—not the winking light variety, which cannot read and write'ear numbers. The sooner -the- living. 11 cbp’Lis pesled at this spot, the better " for. puSlic safety. I mav state that the junction named is more dangerous since the partial black-out was introduced, as 1 have had to stand» with, three: other persons, after alighting at night from a tram car, while two motor cars travelled fast p-st the stationary tram. Conspicuous signs. -“ Dangerous Crossings Ahead.” should show to all road users from, every approach for future safety.—l am, etc.. P- J. SivertiHsn. ;: Princes street. June 16.
