TUAPEKA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL At the annual meeting-of the Tuapeka County Council at Lawrence the following were present: Crs J. Bennetts, W. Cameron, R. G. Cotton, J. George, R. C. Hall, N. J. Hay, .E. H. Murney, and J. D. Revie. Cr Hall was unanimously elected chairman for the ensuing year. Eulogistic references were made to the work of the retiring chairman, Cr R. S. Thompson, and a'minute of appreciation of his services during the past 12 months was recorded., At the ordinary meeting a welcome was extended by the chairman to Cr N. J. Hay, the • newly-elected member for Beaumont Riding. Cr Hay. suitably replied. Finance The treasurer reported that receipts totalled £997 Is Bd, while expenditure amounted to £2447 9s lid. The credit .balance at the bank was £2381 Is in the county fund account and £2024 Is 3d in the renewal account, while £IOOO was on fixed deposit. The New Zealand Counties' Association notified that the plebiscite on whether the bi-ennial conference would be held this year had resulted in 21 county councils favouring the holding of a conference and 70 councils being opposed to it. The District Highways Council not'tied that it was experiencing difficulty in finding suitable gravel for maintenance purposes on the Milton-Queenstown highway between Island Block and. Coal Creek, the gravel in pits alongside the.highway being lacking in binding material, and likely to cause corrugations There was, however, a suitable gravel in a council pit at Minzion, and application was made for permission for the department to remove approximately 1000 cubic yards from this pit.—As the quantity of gravel available is limited, it was resolved to suggest that the Highways Board should acquire further land in this locality as a gravel reserve.

The Lake County Council notified that it had resolved tha't the Government should at once 'be pressed to bring about the immediate cessation of the 40-hour week, together with its hampering regulations.—The resolution was unanimously supported. The Under-secretary of the Public Works Department forwarded a proclamation legalising (he deviation on the HeriotRoxburgh road at Tonkin's Pinch—The clerk reported that tenders had been called for the carrying out of this work.

Mr A. Tumbull wrote applying for permission to erect a gate on tlje Reidy Creek bridge, which was the boundary between his run and that of Cotton Bros.— Permission was granted, subject to the provisions of section 143 of the PublicWorks Act, 1928. Mr R. W. D. McCoskery wrote in regard to the condition of the lower road leading to his property at. Waitahuna —lt was resolved to notify Mr McCoskery that on the recommendation of three engineer:, it had been decided to concentrate., all capital expenditure on his top access road and only limited maintenance on his alternate access on the lower road.. Mr W. J. McGonigal wrote asking that the road between his property and Mr Borland's at Miller's Flat should be graded and a light coat of gravel spread on it. —The inspector reported that the work was already in hand. The Roxburgh East Rabbit Board wrote stating that in an effort to localise the rabbits on a particular portion of its area the board desired to erect a gate on the roadway between the properties of Messrs G. Sanders and F J Smith at Teviot.— Granted, under the usual conditions. Estimates The clerk submitted the following Main Highway estimates for the year: Rae':; Junctioii-McNab, £1370; Balclutha-Law-rence, £1000; Willowbank-Mathesons, £798; Tapanui-Railway Station, £94;. Rox-burgh-Miller's Flat (maintenance), £692 (sealing) £1000; Waipahi-Pomahaka, £201; Miller's Flat-Railway Station. £55; KelsoTapanui, £250; footpath at Roxburgh North, £3so.—Approved. Inspector J. Ireton reported that 11 head of stock had been removed from county roads during the month. The inspector (Mr E. F. Allen J reported that the following gravelling contracts had been completed:—Three hundred cubic yards on the Heriot-Roxburgh road, 374 cubic yards on Knobbies road and 275 cubic yards on the Lee Flat-Black Rock runs road.

The tender of J. J. Brogan for gravelling Smith's road at Waitahuna at 2s per cubic yard was accepted. A tender of £295 9s 8d by J. G. Murphy for the form-.tion and gravelling of Tonkin's Pinch deviation on the HeriotRovburgh road was accepted.
