THE OAMARU DISTRICT

RUGBY FOOTBALL ST. KEVIN'S BEATS WAITAKI WINS FOR ATHLETIC AND DUNTROON : Meeting in a junior competition match played on the Oval on Saturday afternoon. St. Kevin's College registered its fir§t win against Waitaki High School. The first fifteens of these two schools always stage an excellent game and Saturday's was one .of the' best games seen at.the Show Grounds this season, so that early patrons were well rewarded. The game was keenly contested from start to finish. St. Kevins winning by 9 points to 6. Athletic v. Windsor.— The strong wind made conditions difficult for the senior game on the Oval. Making the most of its opportunities. Athletic defeatedVWindsor bv 13 points to 3 T. Robinson contributed 10 points of Athletic's total. In the first spell the Windsor players had the wind at. their backs, but they did not exploit the high punt, and long kicks meant lost opportunities when the ball went to the dead ball line. At the outset the country plavers swept down the field to the Athletic, line, where Davidson secured and scored. Shortly after T. Robinson kicked a penalty goal for Athletic, and just before half time Robinson cut around a five-yards scrum and scored a try. which he converted making the score Athletic 8. Windsor 3. On changing over. Athletic had the advantage of the 'wind, but in this spell the Windsor forwards played a more vigorous game, and Athletic were on the defensive for most of the soell. There was only one score in this spell. Gunn findintr an open space and following ud smartly he secured again near the line, to dive over for a try which Robinson converted, the final scores being: Athletic 13. Windsor 3. Mr G. Campbell was the referee. Duntroon v. Old Boys.— The match at Duntroon between Duntroon and Old Boys settled down under the adverse conditions into a hard forward struggle Duntroon winning by 6 points to 3. Borrie opened the scoring for Old Boys with a try from a good passing rush, in which all the forwards handled. Carlvon equalised for Duntroon with a nenalty goal, and Hedlev broke thron" the defence to score a try. There was no score in the second spell, the game ending: Duntroon 6. Old Boys 3. Mr Macmillan was the referee.

ST. LUKE'S PARISH GUILD MEETINGS Mesdames Ombler (president) and Howard Jones (secretary) received the guests at a very enjoyable, social afternoon held by St. Luke's Ladies' Guild, at which Archdeacon Russell congratulated the guild on its enterprise, and spoke of the help given in the support of the church. A musical programme was- contributed by Mr F. C. Burry I pianoforte solo), Mesdames Rickman, McGregor, Glass, and Miss Sherwin (songs), Mrs Dimick (violin solo), and Mesdames Glass and Rickman, and Miss D. Williams (trio). The Newborough Ladies' Guild held a successful social afternoon, the guests being received by Mesdames Kilgour (president) and Holland (vice-presi-dent). Archdeacon Russell returned thanks to the members for their good work. A musical programme comprised choruses (Eveline Institute Choir), songs and recitations (Mrs Tomlinson), duet (Mesdames Burridge and Keith), and a sketch, "The Engagement Ring" (Mesdames Kilgour and Wright). . <■ Archdeacon Russell took the opening service at the sixth annual meeting of the Newborough Mothers' Union, at which two new members were admitted. Mrs Thomas submitted an encouraging report on the year's work; arid Mrs McKelvey presented the balance sheet, which showed a satisfactory position. The following officers Were elected: President, Mrs Mclntyre; vicepresidents, Mesdames Turvey ajid Hughes; secretary, Mrs Thomas; treasurer. Mrs McKelvey; committee—Mesdames Burridge, Blacklock, and Corlett. Mrs Pinder congratulated the branch on its healthy progress, and Mrs Turvey spoke gratefully of Mrs Mclntyre's inspiring leadership. Robins occupied the chair at the annual meeting of the Oamaru branch of the Waitaki Old Boys' Association, at which it was reported that there were over 200 old boys from North Otago on active service. The McCulloch Memorial, it was stated, would take the form of a system of synchronised clocks in the school but import restrictions were likely to hold up delivery, and contributions to the fund were still being received. S., Crombie. J.P.. that, at Omarama, on June 13 they were deemed to be idle and disorderly persons, having l insufficient lawful means of support. MANCHESTER UNITY ANNIVERSARY OF LOYAL OAMARU LODGE The celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Loyal Oamaru Lodge, Manchester Unity, took the form of an old timers' night in the lodge room, at which there was a large attendance of members and visiting brethren, including the Otago District Executive officers. Following the meeting, a very enjoyable social hour was spent in honour of the old members, D.P.G.M. Bro. W. Couper, who presided, was warmly congratulated on his attainment of the office of Deputy Grand Master of the lodge. Speaking of the Loyal Oamaru Lodge, Bro. Boardman briefly traced its history from the issue of a charter at the time when five members decided to form a lodge in Oamaru. The first N.G. was Bro. W. Smith and the hall was completed in 1867. Bro. T. Webb was the first permanent secretary, from 1867 to 1870, and one of the outstanding members was Bro. W. Brownlee. who was permanent secretary from 1875 to 1905. Bro. James Bee then held that office until 1918, and he was followed by Bro. W. Couper, who had now completed 23 years of service to the lodge. Five branches had been formed in the district, namely Kakanui, 1871, Ngapara, 1891, Dunback, 1892, Star of the. North, 1929, and Juvenile Lodge, 1932. At the present time there were 361 members. The financial position* was sound, and the funds, amounting to over £16,000, were all safely invested in this district.

Bro. Sligo spoke on broad lines ol the Manchester Unity, and its splendid spirit of fraternity and independnece.

Bro. Masters referred to the splendid services given by the old members. There were five members with over 50 years' membership—namely, Bro. G. Hilliker (Wellington), 1880; Bro. Rodgers (Waipukurau), 1882; Bro, Hugh Thomas (Christchurch). 1889; Bro. W. Couper (Oamaru), 1890; and Bro. J. P. Smith (Christchurch), 1891. At 9 o'clock a minute's silence was observed in honour of the fighting forces, and a collection taken up for the " Comforts for Fighters" Fund realised £4. CYCLING ROAD RACE WIN FOR K. HARNEY A cycling road race from the Junction to Herbert and return, a distance of 28 miles, was held on Saturday afternoon. Mr South spoke of the great help Mr Kemnitz had been to the society, both as an active member and in its social life. Mr Kemnitz made a suitable reply. At the annual meeting of the Oamaru Branch of the Waital'd Old Boys' Association on Saturday night, a • presentation was made to Mr R. McLaren, who will shortly be going into camp to join the military forces.
