Friday, June 13 (Before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M.) Failure to Enrol David Bruce Beveridge, aged 32, who described himself as “ a sort of general handyman,” pleaded guilty to having failed to apply for enrolment m the first division of the National Reserve.— Sergeant Black stated that the defendant, when interviewed, said he was under the impression that the fact o£ his having registered under the Social Security Regulations was sufficient, and that a legal firm which acted for him had attended to this.—On behalf of the defendant, Mr M. F. Hanan explained that his client was completely unaware of his obligations. He had applied to join the air force, but had been turned down, and was expecting to be called up in a ballot at any time. His breach was not a wilful one, and at no time had he attempted to avoid military service.—A fine of £2 and costs (10s) was imposed. Douglas Lionel Pond,_ aged 23. was similarly charged, and in his case his counsel.’ Mr G. T. Baylee, explained that the defendant’s employer had been assured at two post offices that provided he (the defendant) had his unemployment lew coupon book he was under no further obligation with regard to enrolment.
