MILITARY SERVICE

SHORT SITTING OF APPEAL BOARD A short sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board—Messrs J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. (chairman), J. Price, and H. Hodgson—was held yesterday afternoon to consider an appeal by Gerald Ernest Hoult, a qualified dentist, who is now in the second year of his medical course. Mr P. S. Anderson represented the Crown. The appellant stated that his great desire was to do missionary work, and he had taken his dental degree and taken up medicine to be fully qualified for this calling. On the grounds of public interest and undue hardship he sought exemption from military service or an adjournment of his appeal until the end of the University year. Captain Berkeley, of the New Zealand Temporary Staff, said that the need for dentists in the army was at present urgent, and the appellant had been called up to go into camp at Trentham on June 14. The Army Department had been unfortunate, he stated, in that , several of the, dentists, called up recently for service had not passed the medical examination. , The appeal was dismissed,. with the condition that the appellant was not called up before'November 30. Reserved Decisions Given The board dismissed the appeals of Eric Penno and of his father, James William Penno, with the condition that the appellant was not called up before July 31, 1941. The board allowed the appeal of George Herbert Christensen; preacher, of Oamaru, on conscientious grounds. The appeal of William Alexander Milmine, farmer, of Windsor, North Otago, on behalf of his son, Bain Roxburgh Milmine, was adjourned sine die. on condition that the reservist was transferred to the territorials from August to October of each year. Appeals by Arthur Scott Nisbet. woollen mill worker, of Weston, North Otago; Archie Arnot Lewthwaite. dairy farm employee, of Oamaru; and Hector Robert Harvey, woollen mill worker, of Enfield, on the grounds of conscientious objections, were dismissed on condition that they were assigned to non-combatant duties.
