SOCIALS FOR SOLDIERS

Roxburgh.—A largely-attended social was held in the Dance Hall in honour of Lance-corporal H. Gilchrist, Drivers J. Pearson and L. Omond, Privates A. Bell, C. Cawthorn, and Ross Watson. Other soldiers from 'Ettrlck and Miller’s Flat were also guests. The evening was taken up with cards and dancing, for .which the music was supplied by Gordon’s Orchestra. Making a presentation to each of the men, the Mayor, Mr F. A. Laloll, expressed wishes for their safe return. Mr A. Burton, president of the Roxburgh District Returned Soldiers’ Association, also made a presentation, handing each man a package of cigarettes, and expressing the wish that they would have a speedy and safe return. He stated that the returned soldiers had a deep appreciation of what the men were doing overseas. Lieutenant W. P. Morrln, on behalf of the Roxburgh Territorial Platoon, made a presentation to Driver J. Pearson and Private A. Bell, who had both been members of the platoon. ■ Mr Morrin stated that the platoon was gradually losing its strength, and already members had distinguished themselves overseas. Several had been in Crete, and one had been in charge of a platoon. Ettrlck.—On Friday evening a social was held in the Ettrick Hall to, honour Privates J. Marsh, L. Bloxham, and H. Prew. Also . present were soldier guests from Roxburgh and Private W. Brown, of Miller’s Flat. Mr D. Kelly, on behalf'of the large gathering present, made a presentation of a cheque to each of the Ettrlck men and cigarettes to each of the guests, and wished them God-speed and a safe return. Karitanc.—A social was tendered to Private Noel Parker on Saturday evening. Mr D. H. Kennedy, who presided, expressed to Private Parker the good wishes of the residents of the district, and referred to the fine work of the Maori Battalion in the Near East, Other speakers were’ Messrs D. Lloyd, M. Talaroa, R. Te Tau, and T. Apes. A gold medal was then presented to the guest by Scout Erin Rumble. An enjoyable programme of dancing and musical items followed Stirring action and farewell songs were given by the Maoris, and a vocal duet was rendered by the Misses Te Tau. Music for dancing was played by Mrs R. Parata, Mrs Paterson, and Mr and Mrs To Tau. Mr D. Lloyd acted as M.C. #
