Combat.—The Rosenor gelding Combat is being schooled over fences, and may be seen out at Oamaru in the Brush Steeplechase A.J.C. Entries—The nominations tor the A.J.C. Derby and other events show a considerable drop on recent years. The nominations for the Derby total 316. as against 426 last year. Important Date.—Owners should note that to-day nominations close for classic events.

At Auckland.—The total of £269,91 < registered at the Auckland winter meeting was invested on 24 races, as against £193,107 10s for 22 races at last year’s meeting. Falls.—On the final day at Auckland 19 horses started in three jumping events, and 10 failed to complete the course. Esperance Bay was brought down by Black Musk when the latter fell at the third flight in the Campbell Hurdles Suspended.—As a result oi an inquiry into interference with Smiling Thru’ in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie, Jockey F. Cleaver, rider of Jewish Lad, was supended for a month. The suspension was not imposed until after the last race, in which Cleaver was unplaced oh Expellant. West Wind.—West Wind, wlnnei of the principal event at the Victoria Racing Club’s June meeting last week, was bred at Riccarton by Messrs J. W and L. W. Storry, and after being in training for a while, was sold privately by them to go to Melbourne. She is a four-year-old filly by Posterity from Lady Zephyr, by Robespierre from Lady Minerva. Six on End.—Sunny Kn.ght has now won six races on end, and his first attempt In open company last Saturday showed him equal to the jump from the hack class. By Galnscourt from Sunny Maid, he is bred well enough to extend his record. Sunny Maid being by Psychology from Sunny Roe. by Sunny Lake from that first-class racing mare Merry Roe.

A Resignation.— Recently in Adelaide Mr J. Skull, chairman Of the Stipendiary Stewards, tendered his resignation with the following explanation:—“ I resigned because I have not been satisfied with the results of appeals. I have been forced to the conclusion that either the stewards are not in a position to Impose penalties, or that the Appeal Board has plainly said that the stewards are wrong, and there was only one thing for me to do.”

Winter Steeplechase.—Three of the six runners fell in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie, and the race was won at double figures by the outsider Smilin’ Thru’. Jewish Lad was left well clear when Saint Musk and Bells of Bow fell at the fence near the six-furlong post Crossing the double with a round completed, Jewish Lad was out 12 lengths from Dozie Boy, Gar Vaals and Hornpipe. Going along the back Dozie Bov and Hornpipe began to move up a little, but they fell at succeeding fences. II then appeared Impossible for Jewish Lad to be beaten, but he was tiring, and Smilin’ Thru’ caught him just before the last fence to beat him by four lengths.

Poor Display.—The Campbell Hurdles at Ellerslie was a fiasco, three of the runners falling at the second fence, and another baulking at the fifth. Black Musk went out to make the pace, only to fall at the second fence and bring down Esperance Bay. who in turn caused Baldric to fall. ' After that Dividend went on in front, closely attended by Hessketoon and Gold Spot, and they were almost together. Turning along the back Hessketoon baulked at the fence near the seven-furlong post, and Dividend jumped clear,;,. Dividend went on to an easy win by six lengths from Gold Spot. Hessketoon was set going again and completed the course for third. Success of Southerners.—The feature of the Auckland winter meeting was the success of the South Island horses. Esperance Bay and Streamline ran first and second in the Great Northern Hurdles, and Streamline won the Great Northern Steeplechase, while Dividend, won the other two principal hurdle races at the meeting. Arctic Dawn won on the fiat, and Jewish Lad won place money. Taking the wins of Streamline and Arctic Dawn at Waikato into calculation, this small team on the northern trip won £4655. of which Streamline won £I9BO, Esperance Bay £I2OO. and Dividend £BOO. The Norse Case.—lt Is understood that an appeal has been lodged with the Canterbury District Committee against the disqualification of Norse for the Duke of Gloucester Cup race. The horse was deprived of the stake under Rule 142, which lays It down that no horse shall be ridden by an unlicensed rider. Even If J the_appeal succeeds under this rule, says the Tlmaru Herald. Norse’s owner will be confronted by another obstacle, Rule 103 enacts that a horse is declared to be ineligible to be entered or to start in any race-and f it starts it shall be disqualified—if tis owned by a person whose last application for a gentleman rider’s certificate was for any reason not granted—unless the Executive Committee of the Conference grants exemption from the operation of this rule.

RICCARTON NOTES (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, June 12. The conditions were unpleasant for the work at Riccarton this morning. The weather was bright early, following a frost, but a fog developed gradually and when the trainers arrived at the course with their horses it was impossible to distinguish objects except close up. It was an unfortunate experience for the trainers, some of whom were ready for final gallops by horses who are to race at Greymoutb on Saturday. The No. 1 grass track was open and a few horses were worked on it, including candidates for Ashburton, but nothing could be seen, the only evidence of the horses being the sound of theh hoofs when galloping. G. Ridgway has returned from a good trip to Auckland, wnere Streamline and Arctic Dawn were winners The two horses are in the best of health Streamline may be nominated for Trentham, but.the present indication is that he will be reserved now for Riccarton in August, with the Hunt Club meeting providing a preliminary for the Grand National. Arctic Dawn looks an improved horse and he may have a trip to Trentham before he takes on the Winter. Cup, a race in which he is expected to play a prominent part. T. H. Gillett is home with Dividend, who got through his three races in good style and now looks the picture of health Though he may be nominated for hurdle races at Trentham he may not be raced again till the Riccarton carnival in August, when the Hunt Club Cup, followed by the Jumpers' Flat Handicap, will provide two races before the Grand National Hurdles L, Gough has Jewish Lad looking none the worse for his trip, during which he earned two lots of place money His form on the last day suggested lack of stamina but he is a good jumper, who should pay his way before the end of the winter He is engaged in the steeplechase at Ashburton and a visit to Trentham next month is possible. One of the three horses G. Ridgway look to Auckland was not brought back. Lockheed, a three-year-old by Foxlight, was galloped on in his race at the Waikato meeting and as his leg filled he was returned to his Auckland owner, who will turn him out to spell for a year. In 16 starts this season Lockheed has had one second, but he has shown promise of making a useful stayer. C C. McCarthy has taken Areas in hand after a snell. He has shaped well on the tracks* but his only win since he came home was at Westport in April. A strong team will go from here foi the Greymouth meeting on Saturday. The horses booked for the trip are St. Cloud. Kllrobe, Winchelsea, Fairy Warden, Greenbank, Sir Frederick, Lights Out, /lame Queen, Rov Bun, Phllibun, The Sandwichman. Haughty Lad. Avenal. Citizen.
