UNDERWEIGHT BREAD
AIR DEPARTMENT CONTRACT BAKER’S COSTLY LAPSE (P A.) WELLINGTON, June 12. The delivery under control of the Air Department at Rongotai of 100 loaves of bread. 97 of which proved underweight, resulted in the conviction of Huia B. Tonks, master baker, trading as the Wellington Bread Company. In a reserved judgment, the magistrate, Mr J. H. Luxford, said the degree of carelessness on the part of the defendant was high, and consequently the penalty must be substantial. A fine of £7 and costs was imposed. The bread was weighed,as a whole when delivered, the magistrate said, and found to be 36Jlb short. The defendant, on learning of the short weight, made up the deficiency later in the day. The officer in charge, however, had already complained to the inspector of weights and measures, who visited the aerodrome and weighed 97 loaves, the remaining three having been cut up. Every loaf was under weight. The magistrate held that the offence was complete when physical delivery was made. “ The object of the section is to make bakers act carefully as well as honestry and to deliver the weight of bread demanded by a purchaser,” he added.
