A sidelight on his experience of human psychology was given by the district official assignee (Mr W. Harte) at a meeting of creditors in Napier. “My experience is that a bankrupt is never more penitent than when he attends a meeting of creditors,” said Mr Harte. “ Promises are usually not worth the energy used in making them, and are forgotten as soon as the bankrupt leaves the meeting.”
