MILTON Obituary.—The death occurred suddenly at St. Albans, Christchurch, on Tuesday of a former well-known and highly-re-soected resident of Milton in the person of Mr John Philips Little. Born in Scotland about 60 years ago, he emigrated to New Zealand with his parents, and after leaving school in Dunedin he was employed by Messrs Gilman, Ltd., until that, firm sold out its plant to the Bruce Woollen Manufacturing Company. He then obtained employment at the local mill, where he remained for about 30 years, being in charge of the hosiery department for some time. He was keenly interested in ambulance work and was for many years an instructor in St. John Ambulance in Milton. With his wife, formerly Miss Sarah MacMullan of Dunedin, and his family of four daughters he left Milton about two years ago to take over a business in Christchurch. , Golf.—ln the semi-final of the ladies knock-out competition Mrs C. H. Hitchon defeated Mrs W. George and will now play Mrs A. F. Wethey in the final. The best card handed in in the ladies’ medal round last Saturday was that of Mrs Hitchon with Mrs George a close second. Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Milton Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, the Mayor (Mr W. J. Cockburn) presiding over a full attendance. Cr U. Walker, chairman of the Finance Committee, gave notice of motion to move at the next meeting that the following rates be struck, last year’s figures being given in parentheses:—General rate 2s 3d (2s 4d); hospital Gd (sd); conversion loan Is (Is); Glen Stream loan 4d (4d); lighting 2d (3d). A new rate of 8d fot the water reticulation loan had been struck and it was proposed that the water rate of 2d last year should not be levied The total rating has been increased by 5d from ,4s 6d last year and is estimated to produce £6518, The Mayor and Ci Walker were reappointed the council’s representatives on the Milton Fire Board. It was decided that the Works Committee should confer with the superintendent ol the Fire Brigade in connection with the positions of the various fire plugs in the borough with a view to giving the brigade a better distribution when the new water reticulation pipes are laid. The waterworks engineer, Mr E. Fletcher Roberts, submitted a progress report on the reticulation scheme. To date two miles and ahalf of pine had been laid and tested with the exception of 58 chains. In addition 40 chains of trench had been opened up ready for piping. Medical Board Sitting.—A sitting of the local medical board was held this week when 60 men from the Roxburgh, Lawrence and Milton districts were examined It is understood that the percentage of passings was only about 40. Sate and Well.—Cabled advice has been received by their relatives in Milton that the following local members of the forces are back in Egypt;—Warrant Officer T. H. Wilson Corporal D. C. Berry, Bandsman S. Begg. Personal.—Prior to leaving Milton to take up his new appointment as exchange clerk at Owaka, Mr Gerald Enright was met by his fellow-employees of the Milton Post Office and presented with a clock and eversharp pencil by the postmaster, Mr T. L. Floyd. Mr Enright briefly responded.
