MISSING TROOPS CHANCES OF ESCAPE FROM GREECE The opinion that a number of New Zealanders reported to be missing after the campaign in Greece might- eventually find their way back to territory Under Allied control was expressed by Colonel R. a. Row, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., former officer commanding the New Zealand Northern Field Force, who has returned after a special trip to the Middle East. Colonel How also spoke of the difficulties of making accurate returns of casualties after such Ca ”^here s are very considerable difficulties even in making accurate estimates,' Colonel Row said. “My own batman, an Aucklander, by the way. got separated from me on the night of tire evacuation from Greece, and did not turn up for six days. He swam 300 yards from the mainland to a little island, he told me afterwards, and there he found three or four other New Zealanders. “ The little party found a small boat and rowed down through Peleponnesus for two days, hiding during the daylight hours and continuing in the darkness. They obtained food from a village where they came across some more New Zealanders and Australians. The two- parties joined forces, got a Greek caique, and continued as far as another village. “ While the men were lying hidden the hext day the Huns sighted their caique and bombed and sank it,” Colonel Row added. “ Eventually, however, the men got to Crete, six days after leaving Greece.” , CORPORAL McCALLUMS DEATH A LEADING LAWN TENNIS PLAYER r Corporal Russell McCallum, who was killed in Crete, where he had been safely evacuated from Greece, was a leading Southland lawn tennis player. He was educated at the South School, Invercargill, and the Southland Boys' High School. On leaving school, he entered the employment of J. J. Niven and Co.. Ltd., where he remained until he enlisted early in the war. He represented Southland at both lawn tennis and badminton. He gained championship honours in a number of tennis tournaments. He was also an enthusiastic hockey player. He was 27 years of age. KILLED IN ACTION ,

PRIVATE G. A. ALLAN Advice has been received by Mrs R. Angus, Macandrew road, and Mr L. R. Allan, Henry street, Maori Hill, that their brother, Private G. A. Allan, was killed in action In Crete. BRIGADIER B. J. ANDREW Advice has been received in Dunedin of the death of Brigadier Basil John Andrew, of the Australian Imperial Forces, from wounds received in Greece. He was a nephew of Mrs Cecil Oaten, of Richardson street, St. Kilda. Brigadier Andrew was aide-de-camp to the Governor of South Australia, and in 1933 was appointed to Army Headquarters in Melbourne, remaining there until he was seconded to the A.I.F. just over a year ago.
