SOCIALS TO SOLDIERS

Sawyers’ Bay.—There - was a large attendance present to honour soldiers on leave, and a bright musical programme was submitted. Each soldier—Sergeant Pilot Owen Glengarry and. Privates Gilbert Gumming, Milo Middleditch, Sydney Mitchell, James Munro and Norman Pritchard—received a leather writing outfit. Entertained previously were Sergeant Pilot John Broadley, Gunner John Paris and Private Alex Fraser, who also received similar gifts. Floral bouquets were handed to the mother, wife or next-of-kin of each soldier. The soldiers appropriately returned thanks. Tapanui.—There was a large attendance at a social and dance in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening in honour of Privates Lloyd Jarrold and Alfred Moore, who were on leave from Burnham Camp. The Mayor (Mr J. L. Wylie) presented each of the guests with a monetary gift on behalf of the Social Committee, items were contributed by Miss Howell (song), Mr and Miss Potts (duet), and Miss C. Thomson (a recitation). Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs Brooke (piano) and Mr E. D. Farrant (violin), and Mr E. McAuley was M.C. Hyde.—On Friday last the Hyde Hall was filled to capacity when a social was tendered to Corporal J. D. Bruhns, who was on leave. Corporal Bruhns is the youngest son of Mr A. C. Bruhns, an old and highly-respected resident of the district. The chairman, Mr J. B. McGill, referred to Corporal Bruhns’s qualities and activities in the district, and then called on Mr George Currie to make a presentation of an engraved wristlet watch from the residents of Hyde. Earnscleugh and Springvale.—At Earnscleugh Private J. Meiklejohn was entertained and presented by Mr C. J. Spain, on behalf of the residents of the district, with an inscribed wristlet watch. Mr A. McKellar (Mayor), on behalf of the people of Alexandra, also handed him a small present. Best wishes were extended by Mr J. R. McKissock, president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. At Springvale Private N. Redmond was entertained recently by district .residents. and Mr J. H. Love, pn their behalf, presented him with a well-filled wallet. The Mayor of Alexandra, Mr A. McKellar, and Mr J. R. McKissock also extended best wishes, Lauder and Becks.— Privates J. Atkins, H. Grenfell and Wilfred Leith were entertained by friends at a dance in the Lauder Hall on Monday evening. On behalf of the residents of the district. Mr A. Brown extended’best wishes to the guests and made a presentation to each. Mr T. Clouston also spoke. Private Grenfell replied on behalf of the guests. Queenstown. —Private Davis Stevenson was entertained by Crown Terrace residents last week at the residence of Mr William H. Thompson. The evening was spent in games and musical items. Private Stevenson was presented with a sum of money subscribed by his Crown Terrace friends. Reference was made to his sterling qualities, and the best wishes of all were extended to him.
