HOLIDAY FOR RACES
WESTFIELD WORKERS’ CASE ATTENTION DRAWN TO OTHER SPECTATORS (Special): WELLINGTON, June 11. A return showing the number of men who left their employment at the Westfield Works on a recent afternoon to attend a race meeting at Auckland was sought by Mr J. O’Brien (Govt., Westland) in the House of Representatives to-day. His request, which covered seven points, was at times intercepted by Opposition interjections. Mr O’Brien asked that there should be included the number of hours of overtime worked by the men in the past two months, the importance of the work on which they are engaged, the number of business men. employers, sheepowners, and farmers attending the same race meeting, and the number of days lost as a result; the number of motor cars used by the persons mentioned, and the amount of petrol consumed. - - £ At this stage Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo) asked: “What about Ministers of the Crown? ” Mr F. W. Doidge (Opposition, Tauranga); Yes, and Government cars. Mr O’Brien also asked the amount of money put through the totalisator at the meeting and the amount of tax that could be taken from.it to assist the country’s war effort.
