CIVIC AFFAIRS

REPORTS OF COMMITTEES ITEMS OF INTEREST The following items of interest are included in the reports of committees to be presented at the meeting of the City Council on Monday night:— Municipal Golf Links The charges at the Municipal Golf Links have been reviewed by the Reserves Committee, which recommends that the following additional charges be incorporated in the scale at present in operation:—(a) A daily ticket for 3s. (b) A reduced charge of Is per round after a certain hour each day. This charge will probably induce players to play an extra few holes in cases where there is insufficient time to play a full round before dark. The time after which the charge will be available will vary according to the season, and will be decided by the professional. Waipori Falls Reserve The Electricity Committee reports that advice has been received from the commissioner of Crown lands that the council's control of the Waipori Falls Sceriic Reserve has expired by effluxion of time The commissioner inquired whether the council would be agreeable to continue control of the reserve for a further period of five years under the same conditions as in the previous appointment, and, as it is advisable for the council to retain control of this' reserve, the committee has intimated to the commissioner its willingness to accept a reriewal of control for a further period of five years. Rabbits in Cemetery Numerous complaints are being received from the public, reports the Reserves Committee, regarding the damage caused to cemetery plots in the Anderson's Bay Cemetery by rabbits. A certain amount of trapping has been carried out, but owing to the danger to other animals this method has been discontinued. Authority has now been granted to lay poison, and warning notices will be erected in the cemetery and an advertisement inserted in the press before any poisoning is carried out. " Clean-up Week "

The Works Committe has investigated the question of conducting a " clean-up" week in the city as the result of representations made by the Dunedin Amenities Society. In view of the allocation provision for the present year it is not possible to comply with this request. In the meantime the committee is- of the opinion that the present arrangeriients for the collection of rubbish from domestic premises should meet the position. The Sanitary Works Department will clear reasonable quantities of re:use, other than trade and vegetable refuse, from domestic premises provided they are suitably flattened. This service is not given in cases where persons shift house.

Silverstrearn Pipe-line The city engineer reports that the 10inch steel pipe-line which delivers water from the Powder Creek pump to the Silverstream race at Whare Flat is not in ,good condition and ha 3 reached the'stage of being a potential weakness in time of drought. Authority has therefore been granted, reports the Water Committee, to replace, this line with 12-inch steel con-crete-lined pipes, and the work will be carried out immediately so that the pipe-line will be in good working order before the next dry spell. Provision is, also being made to place a second pump, which is in the possessicn of the department, to act as a standby in the event of the existing Dump going out of commission. The total length of main, to be renewed is approximately 700 feet and the estimated cost of the work is £9OO. This expenditure will be charged to the Silverstream Maintenance Vote. Traffic Returns The transport manager's statement of the traffic receipts for the fortnightly periodended on May 17 compared with the corresponding period last year reveals that the revenue shows an increase of £849. The ; principal increase has been shown in the bus revenue, states the report of the Transport. Committee. Beth the ordinary and hired work has benefited by the Easter period, while on the other hand, this fact has been detrimental to the tram revenue. This factor also accounts for- the decrease in cable revenue. Apart from Easter, the outstanding feature of the return is the increase in ordinary, bus revenue which is equal to" 12.7 per cent, with a reduction in mileage of 1757 miles, whereas the tram revenue represents an increase of 2.4 per cent., with an increase in mileage of 9600 miles.
