£6OOO REQUIRED
"COMFORTS FOR FIGHTERS" COMPLETION OF OTAGO QUOTA Confidence that the people of Otago would readily find the sum of £6OOO which hes still to be raised to complete the province's' quota of the " Comforts for Fighters " Fund was expressed yesterday by the publicity officer of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council (Mr L. H. Frude). " What may be termed the final milestone in the progress of Otago's £20,000 'Comforts for Fighters' Fund has been reached," Mr Frude said. "In a comparatively short time Otago has subscribed about £14,000 to this. call. It is magnificent progress. But. with only a few weeks to go—the appeal definitely closes at the end of the present month —£6ooo of Otago's .quota has yet to be raised. It is confidently anticipated that the June appeal, which is centred round the combined commercial effort, will raise at least the needed £6OOO. I believe we shall exceed our quota of £20,000. Otago has a habit of exceeding its patriotic quotas. Continuous Service "The Otago Provincial Patriotic Council," Mr Frude added, "is continually packing and despatching comforts to our sailors, soldiers, airmen and nurses overseas and every possible precaution is being taken to ensure that these comforts reach our fighting services with the ieast possible delay Donors may rest assured that those in the front line receive comforts as quickly as transport permits. The word 'comforts* covers a multitude of necessities —mobile canteens in all theatres of war where our fighting services are engaged, comforts on troonships and in New Zealand and overseas cgjnps. the establishment of military bands, wool for the Air Force, church huts including the Salvation Army the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church the Presbyterian, Methodist and all non-conform-ist churches, and the Y.M.C.A. "It is the duty of those who enjoy the security and peace of Otago." Mr Frude declared "to match in will and resolution the people of Great Britain and to bend all energies to the common task of working for. that victory m which alone lies the assurance of .survival and freedom. Otago has been told of the need of o.ur fighters overseas often enough before. Everv penny given to the ' Comforts for Fighters' Fund goes to lighten the burden of those who are prepared to 'lay down their lives for their friends.' That Otago will see that the £6OOO needed is found before ihe end of the month is a foregone conclusion That belief is based on Otago's magnificent response in previous war efforts."
