GIRLS IN FACTORIES

WORK ON MUNITIONS CONTRACTS OUTPUT GREATER THAN MEN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, May 21. The work being done by girls or munitions contracts is most satisfactory. the manager of an engineering firm told the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington to-day. He said that he had employed from 90 to 104 hands before the war. but had only 70, including 14 girls, at present. Only 10 of the 70 were engaged on purely civilian work, the others being bn munitions or work for the Public Works Department. The output by the girls, he added, was greater than that of the men, because the girls, unlike the men. did not tire when the work was monotonous. “The girls can talk and still carry on their work. A girl’s hands work apart from her mind, but a man’s hands and mind work together.” he added.
